Why Play with an Art Desk?
Creativity + Role Play
Creativity is the ability to think outside the box – and what better way to hone this skill than to hand a child a blank canvas to play with! Crafting new pieces of artwork requires kids to think creatively and with an open mind, string ideas together in new ways and use creative solutions to solve problems.
Esteem + Self Expression
When we encourage children to explore art, we encourage them to express themselves! Art provides a unique environment where it is safe to experiment and create, where questions are invited and new ideas are celebrated. Regular access to this type of environment helps kids feel more confident and comfortable with their creativity as they grow.
Visual Skills + Memory
Painting, drawing and sculpting are great ways to develop visual-spatial skills in young children. With every brush stroke, kids analyze what they see and make choices based on that visual information. Over time, these visual-spatial skills will go on to help your child read maps, follow dance moves and even solve math problems.
Physical + Motor Skills
Gripping a paint brush, drawing dots, mixing colors or squeezing a glue bottle all require physical dexterity and coordination. Practicing these motions often is a great way to fine-tune motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Play Together!
- When your little artist is ready, tell them what you both will be drawing within 5-10 minutes. When the time is up, reveal your creations to each other! It’s fun to see how different two drawings of the same thing can be. Ideas can vary from elaborate to simple – like a fishing boat on the water, a bird sitting in a tree, or a house, car, or airplane.
- Letter & Shape Practice: Take turns showing your child how to write letters and draw shapes. Gradually start sounding out words for them to spell, or shape sequences to draw.
- Duet Draw: Take turns drawing one line to create a masterpiece! Watch as your creation turns into abstract art or forms a scene. The possibilities are endless as you make memories and a beautiful piece of art together. Don’t forget to display your finished piece with the included clip!
