American Racing Equipment was started by Romeo Palamides, an early drag racing innovator and grandfather of jet car racing, in 1959. One of the first American Racing wheels that were intended for the street was the aluminum Torq-Thrust, introduced in 1963. They could be considered to be the definitive aluminum hot rod wheel.
