Description
One of many treats inside: Chicken and Sweet Potato Treats
Makes about 30 treats / Prep Time: 60 minutes / Cook Time: 90 minutes
Chicken and sweet potato treats are a tasty way to keep your dog satiated. With protein and carbs, these treats will help fuel long hikes. They taste great and they’re easy to carry.
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Place the sweet potatoes on a baking pan or baking sheet. (For easier cleanup, line the sheet with parchment paper.)
- Put the sweet potatoes in the oven and set a timer for 25 to 35 minutes, depending on the size of your halves.
- When the potatoes are done, carefully remove them, and turn the oven down to 350°F.
- Once the potatoes are cooled, scoop the potatoes out of their skins and into a food processor. Add the boiled chicken, and chop.
- In the bowl of the electric mixer, beat the eggs with the chicken and sweet potato mixture until blended.
- Add in the whole-wheat flour until just incorporated. (If the dough is really sticky, you’ll need to add a little more flour—just a little bit at a time though, and not more than 1/2 cup overall. You want the dough to be just a little tacky.)
- Place the dough on a surface lightly sprinkled with flour and knead a few times until it comes together.
- Using a rolling pin lightly coated with whole-wheat flour, roll out the dough to about a 1/4-inch thickness.
- Using cookie cutters, cut out the desired shapes and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
- Place in the oven and bake until the treats are dry and edges are golden, about 20 minutes.
- Carefully remove from the oven, and transfer onto a cooling rack.
- Once cool, store in an airtight container. They should last 4 weeks in the refrigerator.
Tip: Plain sweet potato fries also make great treats. Peel and cut potatoes into fry shapes, and bake at 375°F for 20 minutes.
